By late 1944, all of the armoured regiments equipped with Cromwell tanks had hard-hitting support tanks armed with the 17 pdr gun to tackle the better armoured German Tiger and Panther tanks. Initially there had only been enough Fireflies to give each troop one support tank. However, by the end of 1944, most had two, giving a half-and-half split between Cromwells and support tanks.
The Firefly and Challenger tanks often sat back in cover, watching over the Cromwells as they dashed to the next piece of cover. Once the Cromwells were ready, they'd move up and join them, ready to repeat the process. When facing heavy tanks, the 17 pdr tanks would engage them from the front, while the speedy Cromwells worked their way around the flank looking for a side shot.
