The Japanese Navy recognised the need for armoured support for their Special Naval Landing Forces (SNLF), and while the Army’s Type 95 Ha-Go sufficed once the forces had landed, the Type 95 required landing craft or transports. The Navy therefore developed the Type 2 Ka-Mi amphibious tank to support the SNLF during actual landing operations and these were formed into a number of Ka-Mi Sensha Chutai (Type 2 Ka-Mi Amphibious Tank Companies).
